What is employee generated content and does it actually work?

Your team's combined LinkedIn network is almost certainly larger than your company's ad reach. Most companies have never used it deliberately.
Employee generated content, often called EGC, is any brand-related content created and shared by employees rather than the company's official channels. Posts about what they are working on, what they are learning, what they believe about the industry they work in. Content that carries their name and their face, not the company logo.
The numbers behind it are hard to ignore. Brand messages shared by employees achieve 561% more reach compared to the same messages distributed through official company channels. Employee-shared content sees 8 times more engagement than content from brand pages. Leads from employee shares convert 7 times more than leads from other sources.
The reason is simple. People trust people. A post from someone you know professionally carries a different weight than a sponsored post from a company you have never heard of. The trust is already there in the employee's network. The content just needs to be worth reading.
Why most companies try it and stop within six weeks
The typical approach is an all-hands email asking people to post more on LinkedIn and share company updates. Sometimes a document with suggested topics. Sometimes a reminder that engagement helps the brand.
A few enthusiastic people post twice and go quiet. Everyone else does nothing.
This approach fails because it asks people to do something without removing the reasons they are not already doing it. They do not know what to say. They are worried about saying the wrong thing. They do not have time to figure it out. They do not feel like they have anything worth posting about.
Sending an email addresses none of those blockers. It just adds guilt to the list.
What a system that actually works looks like
A clear playbook, not a suggestion document. A playbook tells each person specifically what to post, how often, in what format. It removes the decision-making that drains energy before a post is even written. When someone knows exactly what they are supposed to do today, they are far more likely to do it than when they face a blank page.
Topic banks built for individuals. Generic company talking points make for generic content. A topic bank that works is built around what each person actually knows, what their specific role gives them insight into, and what their particular network would find useful. A software engineer posting about what they are learning this week is interesting. The same engineer reposting company announcements is forgettable.
Templates that give structure without removing voice. A template is a starting point, not a script. It removes the paralysis of the blank page without making every post sound identical. People with something to say often do not post because beginning is the hardest part. A template solves that specific problem.
An approval process fast enough to actually be used. Any process requiring three sign-offs and a two-day turnaround will kill participation. The approval step should be there for compliance and quality, not as a barrier. Teams that do this well have a same-day review process people trust to be fast.
What the results look like
Companies that implemented employee generated content saw a 27% increase in online engagement and a 19% rise in sales within the first year.
On LinkedIn specifically, 30% of a company's engagement comes from employee-generated content. The clients at Inizio who have run this see their combined team reach triple within 90 days. No advertising, no aggressive tactics. A system that made it easy for people who had things worth saying to say them consistently.
One firm with 50 employees adopting an employee advocacy programme generated over 3,850 clicks and 4,000 shares. The earned media value of those impressions, calculated against what the same reach would have cost in paid advertising, was nearly $17,400.
Why this converts better than advertising
Advertising buys attention from people who were not looking for you. Employee content earns attention from people who already have a reason to pay attention, because the person posting is reaching their own network, people who already know and trust them to some degree.
The reach that comes from employee content tends to convert better than the reach from advertising for exactly this reason. The audience seeing it is already warm to at least one person in your company. That warmth transfers to the brand in a way cold advertising cannot manufacture.
The failure mode even with a good system
The most common problem, even in companies with a solid playbook, is treating this as a launch rather than an ongoing practice.
Month one energy is usually high. By month three, without a process to maintain momentum, the whole thing quietly stops. The companies that sustain this treat it the way they treat any other business process: regular reviews, clear accountability, small adjustments based on what the data shows.
EGC is not a campaign. It is a channel. Build it like one.
